Cheptegei

Uganda’s long distance runner Joshua Cheptegei broke the 5km world record on Sunday with a time of 12 minutes 51 seconds.

The 10000m world champion improved on Kenyan Rhonex Kipruto’s previous best of 13min 18sec last month in Valencia after making the most of perfect conditions in the second edition of this race. Cheptegei took 10000m gold at the world championships in Doha last October, with Kipruto in bronze.

Cheptegei wrapped up the best calendar year 2019 performance ever by a Ugandan runner with the breaking of the 10km world record (WR) at the Valencia Trinidad Alfonso race in Spain in December.

He as expected shattered the previous WR mark set by Kenyan Leonard Patrick Komon over the 10K distance nine years ago by posting a stellar 26 minutes and 38 seconds.
