The 2020 Pepsi University football league (UFL) curtains are set to get up this Wednesday as defending champions Uganda Christian University (UCU) start their title defense campaign at home against Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) at their Mukono campus.

UCU enjoyed their most successful football season last year –winning both the Pepsi University Football League trophy in November 2019 and lifting the football trophy at the AUUS University Games less than a month later.

They will however have a much changed squad from last season after the departure more than eight (8) first team players who either graduated or played the maximum of four (4) seasons while others attained the maximum age of 25 years. Kaye Kizito Ezra, Ssemambo Jerome James, Wadribo Eric, Adriko Vincent, Kakembo Joseph and Mbowa Derrick are some of the players as well as Oyam Timothy and Lubega Mohammed who joined Premier League sides Police and URA FC respectively.

UCU coach Kintu Mwera is however not worried about the player exits, saying that although he has a new squad, they will be able to face the challenge. “Yes we have lots several key players among them Kaye Kizito, Semambo Jerome and Wadribo Eric. However, we have gotten suitable replacements and I am sure they will deliver,” Mwera said.

For Islamic University in Uganda, tomorrow’s game is a chance to avenge their loss to UCU in the AUUS University Games football final at Kisubi University in December. UCU won the tie 2-1 but IUIU coach Kebba Haruna believes that his side will do better at Mukono. “We had a very poor season last year in the University Football League where we finished at the bottom of our group. However we managed to bolster the squad and in the AUUS games at Kisubi University, we managed to reach the finals where we lost to UCU,” Kebba said. “Fate has brought us together again and we are looking forward to avenging that loss,” he added.
