The 10th edition of the Inter Parliamentary Games (IPG) commenced this Sunday with the official opening at the St Mary’s stadium, Kitende with the president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni expected to grace the opening ceremony.
The games are set to run from December 7-18 and the legislators will battle in football, netball, volleyball, basketball, tug of war, darts, golf and athletics.
The aim of the 12-day Inter-Parliamentary Games is to create collaboration between the East African Parliaments, to sensitise the citizens on the importance of the East African Community integration process and create a networking platform for business marketing.
Rwanda and South Sudan did not confirm participation despite communication to respective Clerks to Parliament.
Hon. Hamson Obua, the chairperson of the central organising committee said that Lugogo Indoor Stadium will host indoor games like basketball, volleyball, netball while StarTimes stadium, Lugogo, Namboole Stadium will host athletics and football while and St Mary’s stadium, Kitende will also host football.
The Uganda Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga confirmed Parliament’s full funding of all host activities whilst with each parliament facilitating its own members.
The games will also provide an opportunity for citizens of member states to commemorate 20 years since the revival of the East African Community in 1999. Uganda won the title last year in Tanzania.
