Kenyan golfer Daniel Nduva was crowned the overall winner of the 2019 Castle Lite Uganda Open Golf Tournament – Amateurs Open on Saturday at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, Kigo.
Nduva who played 2 under during the grand final was fourth going into the last day with a total gross of 216 off 54 holes. He registered a total gross of 286 (75, 70, 71and 70) from Thursday to Saturday respectively.
“I am really very happy for this victory having trailed in the opening three days,” revealed Nduva, who broke Uganda’s 11-year old dominance at this event. The hosts have been triumphant in this amateur category since George Olayo (Entebbe Golf Club) emerged victor in 2008.
Simon Njogu Muthoni (Rift Valley Golf Cub – Kenya) who posted a gross of 69 on the opening day of the 72-stroke play competition finished second after playing 1 under in the grand finale.
It was a heart break for Njogu after he finished one stroke behind the 2019 champion off a total gross of 287 (69, 75, 71 and 72 respectively). Samuel Chege Njoroge completed Kenya’s sweep at the podium when he returned a total gross of 288 (73, 72, 68 and 75 respectively).
Three-time winner (2018, 2016 and 2015) Ronald Otile (Tooro Golf Club) failed to defnd the title he won last year after finishing sixth off a total gross of 295 (82, 68, 66 and 79 respectively).
Despite better performance on Day two and three, Otile’s collapse is much attributed to his poor performance on Day One as he registered a 13 stroke deficit behind the leader. Ugandan duo of Joseph Cwinyai – 293 and Denis Asaba – 295 finished fourth and fifth respectively.
This year’s Uganda Open is sponsored by Castle Lite with Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Liquid Telecom, Pepsi, Britam, Absa, Isuzu and NTV as co-sponsors.
