Betway Kobs were on Saturday crowned the 2019 national 7s Roke Telkom national rugby Sevens Series champions after securing maximum points at the final circuit at Legends Grounds in Kampala.
It is Betway Kobs fifth 7s title, second behind record 11-time champions Hima Cement Heathens. The 2017 winners also bagged Shs1.6m as cash prize courtesy of Guinness after reclaiming the title while runners up Stanbic bank Pirates received Shs0.5m.
After seven circuits, Betway Kobs had 151 points, three above last year’s winners Stanbic Black Pirates. The Betway-sponsored Kobs won four circuits while Pirates triumphed at three events as both teams battled put at all the circuit finals.
Pirates beat Kobs at the last circuit 05-24 but were three points short. Betway Kobs captain Joseph Aredo was happy with the overall team performance –saying that they will build on the 7s victory ahead of the forthcoming Uganda Cup tournament.
Betway Kobs are the Uganda Cup defending champions and Aredo is confident that they will defend the title.
